    Emerging Native American Artists: Apply for Amerind Residency

    Call for Artist-in-Residence Applications

    Dragoon, AZ –The Amerind Museum seeks Artist-in-Residence applications from emerging Native American artists. Selected artists must reside at the Amerind Museum for 1 month at a time to be determined between the selected artists and Amerind’s staff.

    This residency is open to Native American artists working in all media, including visual, performing, and literary arts.

    The Amerind is a museum, art gallery, and research center dedicated to archaeology, Native cultures, and Western art. Its campus is located in Dragoon in southeastern Arizona and surrounded by the spectacular boulders of Texas Canyon.

    The selected artist(s) will receive housing, workspace, and a $3,000/month stipend. The artist will be asked to give a public talk about their work and/or hold some open studio hours. While in residence, the artist is welcome to sell their work directly to the public. Depending on the nature of the artist’s work, the Amerind Museum may consider an exhibition or similar event by the selected artist. We welcome visual artists, performing artists, and literary artists.

    Eligibility

    We are seeking Indigenous artists who are at the beginning of their artistic careers. Artists must be enrolled members of a state or U.S. federally recognized Native American tribe. The selected artists will need to provide proof of their enrollment.

    Note: The artist must have reliable transportation. The town of Dragoon is 1-hour drive east of Tucson. The closest grocery stores are in Benson, AZ, a 20-minute drive from the Amerind Museum.

    Alternatively, you may record a video in which you answer these questions. Video recordings should last no more than 5 minutes. Email all responses, documents, and other files to ekaldahl@amerind.org.

    6. Provide a letter of reference from a teacher, minister, tribal leader, museum professional, or gallery owner.
    7. Answer the following essay question: How will this residency help you with your growth and development as an artist? (300 words maximum. You may also answer this question in a video recording.)
    8. Visual artists only: please submit 4 to 5 digital images of your artwork.
    9. Performing artists only: submit 3 to 4 audiovisual recordings of your work.
    10. Literary artists only: submit 3 to 4 samples of your writing.

    The review of applications is ongoing. A committee of senior Indigenous artists will select the winning applicant(s). The Amerind staff will contact selected artists with more details about when their residency may occur.
