Native POP: People of the Plains art market prepares for fifth annual artist reception and art market
Rapid City, SD—The fifth annual Native POP: People of the Plains art market and cultural celebration is first and foremost a juried fine art show featuring established and emerging Native American artists. Native POP: People of the Plains will host an awards presentation and artist reception at the Dahl Arts Center, Friday, July 14, 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Meet award-winning Native artists and preview artwork ahead of the art market on Saturday, July 15 at Main Street Square. The awards ceremony starting at 6:00 pm will recognize achievement in four major categories: Two-Dimensional, Three-Dimensional, Adornment, and Emerging. In addition, there are prizes for Innovation, People’s Choice and a Special Publicity award with $17,000 in total award money.
Juried artists are encouraged to submit their original art for judging on Friday, July 14. Last year Best of Show and Best of Division I: Adornment went to Jared Lanz (Oglala Lakota) for Sitting Bull’s Warshirt, a beaded and quilled brain-tanned leather war shirt. Wade Patton (Oglala Lakota), also an emerging artist, won the Best of Emerging Category and also the Publicity award.
Tickets for the awards presentation and artist reception are $15 and one can purchase tickets online at nativepop.org, by phone, or at the Dahl Arts Center either in advance or on the day of the event.
On Saturday, July 15, Native POP: People of the Plains presents a juried art market featuring nearly 50 of the Great Plains’ best established and emerging artists. Admission is free and open to the public. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase award-winning art directly from the artists.
In addition to visual art, Native POP also features top Native performing artists as well as cultural demonstrations by tribal members such as regalia making, storytelling, and flute making. As part of the cultural celebration, Native POP will also host a fashion show and a Native film showcase.
Closing out the day will be free evening performances by Sons of Sans Arc and Miracle Dolls. All of these family-friendly events will bring the community together in the fun, beautiful outdoor venue, Main Street Square, in the heart of downtown Rapid City.
